Case Study: F1 Journalist Peter Windsor’s Online Presence Starting To Take Shape
For a traditional media pundit like Peter Windsor, adapting to Twitter in 2010 was a lot more difficult than first imagined. After the disappointment of USF1, the former Williams and Ferrari team manager (and award-winning journalist) was a bit reluctant to just throw himself out there in the new media world. After explaining the culture of Twitter and what’s expected, the social media micro-blog was the logical first step in building his online presence. Our meeting at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal this summer paved the way for a business, as well as personal relationship that has grown stronger every day.
The Twitter account @PeterDWindsor started slowly and we coached him through it, explaining the culture, what’s expected and manoeuvring him through the process patiently. As a prolific writer, Peter’s engagement became more and more comfortable with each passing day. Today, you will often see Peter interacting with other people from all ends of the world on F1 and racing issues. ‘I’m so pleased that Luciano talked me through the Twitter culture and encouraged me to start an account’, Peter recounts. ‘There were bumps in the road in the beginning, but people have been so supportive on Twitter that it is starting to feel like a home away from home’.
Fast forward a few months later, with his Twitter account receiving a constant flow of mentions and engaging commentary: it was time to create the website, TheRaceDriver.com and get it up and running. ‘The website was the next logical step in the process. I enjoy writing and creating commentary through videos, so producing content came natural to me’, says Windsor. What Peter also mentioned was the collection of old photos he’s compiled over his many years in formula one. Because Peter is a history buff and passionate about his knowledge of things past, the photos naturally became the main concept for ‘Peter’s Library’ on his website. ‘Posting the photos and the descriptions that follow have brought back many memories, both good and bad, of my life and career in racing,’ continues Peter. ‘Hopefully, sharing these with others will offer visitors a glimpse of my past, as well as some valuable insight into the history of racing and my passion for it.’
With over 6,000 page views in the first week, the website has gotten off to a great start. ‘There have already been positive comments on the ease of sharing the website content. ‘I’d recommend Luciano’s online and social media consulting services to anyone’, says Windsor. With constant updates and many archived articles and photos waiting to be posted, there will be an abundance of new and old content populating the website.
The next phase will be coming soon…
